Unprecedented stresses are being placed on our highways due to rising traffic and shrinking maintenance funds.
Rutting, pothole formation, and fatigue cracking can happen when flexible asphalt pavements are subjected to repeated cyclical stresses. This issue could worsen as vehicle use and axle loads increase. Simply repairing a problematic pavement won’t solve the issue long-term since cracks from the underlying layers will quickly spread through the new overlay, accelerating ageing. When asphalt overlays are applied on concrete pavements that have already been installed, reflective cracking may also be an issue.
Our options for strengthening asphalt pavement on highways are as follows:
- Cracking in reflection
- Heat- and fatigue-induced cracking
- Shoving and bumping
- Having trouble
- Heaviest axle loads
- Building on peat soils
- Separate settlement
- Inferior grades
- Reduced thickness of the building layer
By lowering fatigue, reflective, thermal, and settlement cracking, the reinforcing of asphalt pavements can result in a tripling of the service life of roadway pavements. The “whole life cost” of a reinforced pavement is lower than that of an unreinforced one due to higher fatigue life and longer maintenance intervals.
The reinforcement reduces and redistributes stress concentrations in the asphalt matrix, which results:
- Delays fracture initiation and slows crack propagation.
- Smaller crack’s width.
- Greater distances between cracks.
- Variation in the cracks.
We provide a variety of products for bituminous paving reinforcement. Road Mesh additionally strengthens the pavement’s structure, whereas special glass fibre and polyester geogrids prevent reflective cracking. The lateral restriction that Road Mesh® gives the asphalt increases its resistance to rutting and shoving. Road Mesh can be utilised in new-build roads as well as overlays since it fundamentally strengthens pavements.
We are confident in the effectiveness of our solutions since they have undergone considerable research and development, as well as years of real-world project experience. Our research has helped to build the design programme, which our engineers utilise to address the transportation issues of our customers.
